Understanding VoIP

VoIP services work differently than your traditional phone lines and service. It converts your voice into a digital signal that travels over the Internet, rather than over telephone lines. When you call a regular phone number (landline, etc), it converts the signal to a regular telephone signal before it gets to its destination. You will notice no difference on your end and neither will the person you are calling.

This technology allows you to make calls directly from a computer, a VoIP phone or a standard phone connected with a special VoIP adapter.

What Equipment is Needed

If this sounds good to you, then you might be wondering what equipment you will need to make this happen. The good news is that it is easier than ever before to have VoIP connected in your home or office and you don’t have to spend a fortune getting it set up or for maintaining the service over time.

You will need a broadband (high speed Internet) connection. It can be a cable modem, high-speed service such as DSL or a local area network. You will also need a computer, adaptor or a special VoIP phone in order to make your calls. If you set up an office network, you will need multiple phones and/or computers all capable of making calls from the network.
